Can Artificial Intelligence Understand Emotions?

Human emotions are both a reality in everyday life and one of science's most complex mysteries. Whether it's anger, joy, sadness, or love, each emotion taps into a deep recesses of the brain. Yet, compared to the complexities of human emotion, artificial intelligence (AI) can seem somewhat naive. But with the advancement of emotion AI, this "purely rational" machine is edging closer to a crucial breakthrough: Can AI truly understand the human brain's emotions?

What is emotion AI?
Emotion AI, sometimes referred to as affective computing, is a field in which AI analyzes and interprets human emotional states to understand deeper interactions. Its goal isn't simply to read facial expressions or vocal intonation; it attempts to capture true human emotion from complex physiological and psychological signals.
Imagine if your car could sense your anxiety on your commute today and play calming music; or if your smartwatch could detect that you're experiencing mild stress and remind you to take a deep breath. The requirements for these applications require emotion AI to go beyond simply "reading" emotions; it also requires understanding where those feelings come from and what they mean.
The Current State of AI's Emotional Understanding
Currently, emotion AI mostly infers human emotions by analyzing non-verbal signals. For example:
- Facial expression recognition: Using cameras to capture micro-expressions can identify basic emotions such as anger and joy.
- Voice emotion analysis: Identifying a person's emotional state based on subtle changes in voice pitch, speech rate, and speech style.
- Physiological monitoring: Using heart rate fluctuations, galvanic skin response (EDA), and even electroencephalogram (EEG) to infer emotions.
These technologies are already widely used. For example, automated customer service can analyze a customer's voice tone to determine their emotions and adjust their tone and response. Some emotion monitoring devices also attempt to help patients with depression manage their emotions by monitoring heart rate fluctuations.
However, we must acknowledge that AI still faces significant technical and philosophical challenges when attempting to interpret human emotions. After all, human emotions are not simply "happiness + anger = equilibrium." They are essentially the product of complex interactions between brain activity and the environment, and AI can currently only decode surface signals.

Does AI truly understand emotions?
The core of this question lies at two levels: surface recognition and deeper understanding.
- Surface Recognition: AI Can Already "See" Human Emotions
From a technical perspective, AI can indeed "capture" emotions from our outward behavior. For example, AI can learn what an "angry" expression looks like by analyzing a thousand images of frowns, or label the intonation characteristics of "joy" using voice samples from tens of thousands of people. However, this raises a question: Is emotion truly a "combination" of these discrete signals?
When someone says "I'm fine" with an angry expression, AI may see the tense brows and raised voice tone, concluding "anger or excitement." In reality, however, such emotions may be part of a deeper sense of loss. Simple signal analysis cannot replace the internalized and subtle psychological processes of emotion.
For this reason, many researchers have realized that relying solely on outward signals, AI can only "guess" emotions. To truly understand emotions, we need to delve deeper into the brain signals and activity behind them.
- Deeper Understanding: AI still cannot comprehend subjective experience.
Emotion is not static; it is dynamic and fluid. More importantly, it is a deeply subjective experience. For example, listening to a piece of classical music might relax you, but for someone else, the same piece might make them bored or even anxious. Emotions aren't one-size-fits-all; they have histories and subjective preferences.
AI can currently identify universal patterns by analyzing big data, but it lacks a crucial ability: empathy and empathy. It can't fundamentally understand the meaning of emotions because machines lack life experiences, past memories, and emotional connections. Even if it can analyze millions of data samples and conclude that "a certain behavior equates to a certain emotional posture," these emotional conclusions lack a soul.
More importantly, emotions encompass both overt emotional expressions and the underlying memories, cultural background, and personality traits. For example, a complex emotion like regret is difficult to capture through simple behavior or expression; it's more of an experience intertwined with past experiences. While AI can identify surface patterns of emotion through big data, it's still far from understanding the deeper, more philosophical and psychological aspects of emotion.
- The Future of Emotional AI: Will the Human-Machine Relationship Change?
Even so, the development of emotional AI is not entirely stagnant. With the integration of brain science and artificial intelligence, we've seen some exciting breakthroughs.
First, through neuroscience techniques, such as brainwave research, we've been able to decode emotional activity in specific brain regions and convert this data into input for AI models. This means AI can go beyond simply observing "outward manifestations" and even begin to attempt to directly interpret emotional signals from the human brain. However, this technology is still in its very early stages and raises significant ethical concerns. After all, if AI can directly "scan" human emotions, how can privacy and data usage be guaranteed?
Second, the integration of AI and virtual reality (VR) has opened up even more profound applications for emotional AI. For example, through VR simulation therapy, AI can capture a patient's emotions in specific situations and adjust the simulated content in real time to help alleviate anxiety or even trauma. This technology goes beyond mere "perception" and goes a step further in emotional healing.
